Local Government Authority LGA says the Male’ City Council cannot move forward with the no-confidence complaint against Mayor Shifa Mohamed.

In a letter addressed to Mayor Shifa from CEO of LGA and Maldives Democratic Party MDP Deputy Secretary-General Afshan Latheefa, it said that in an emergency meeting of the LGA it was decided that the council cannot proceed with a no-confidence complaint against the mayor when the authority was making an inquiry about the council.

Sources close to the matter inform local media 'The Press' the complaint was lodged during the 103rd official congress of the City Council.

The no-confidence complaint from one of the council's members has been accepted to the authority, with City Council ordering a summoning on Male' City's Mayor within a period of 10 days.

Moreover, sources claim the complaint has been lodged after review based on the amendments under the Maldives Constitution in 2019. Local Government Authority advises to proceed with the matter through legal parameters, adding Tuesday's congress was conducted under the same context.

Reports further claim Male' City Council's deputy and another councilor were not in favor of the no-confidence motion against Mayor Shifa Mohamed. Additionally, eight of the council members have voted in favor of inquiring both Mayor and her deputy over negligence towards the Decentralization Act.

Earlier in July, another no-confidence complaint was lodged against the Male' City Mayor.
