Former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Miuzzu says the Gulhi Falhu port project is detrimental to the citizens of Male’.
In a tweet, Miuzz said for the sake of the right to housing and shelter of the citizens of Male’, the Gulhi Falhu port project should be ceased. He added that the only permanent answer to the question of a port in the area was always Thilafushi.
Environmental groups have been voicing concerns of the dredge work for the port in Gulhi Falhu which is expected to harm the reefs of nearby Villimale.
The Gulhi Falhu port is a part of the government’s Greater Malé Connectivity Project.
Recently the government secured a financial package worth USD 500 from India for the project.
The government had said that the Project will connect Malé, Villingili, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu, via bridges and causeways of a total length of 6.695 kilometers.
Once completed, the Project will be the single largest infrastructure project in the Maldives.
