Speaker of the parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed says the most effective system to make a government accountable for its action is to have discussions among individuals with diverse viewpoints.

In a tweet today, Nasheed said that those summoned to the parliamentary committees not necessarily all supporters of the current government.

He said that it is imperative to hear different viewpoints and that the best system to make the government more accountable is to have individuals with diverse views give counsel to the parliamentary committees.

The former President has been hinting at a change in governing systems in the country with the speaker inclined to a Parliamentary System of governance.

In an interview to the Law Initiative on the 12th anniversary of the Constitution, the current constitution was designed to thrive better under a parliamentary system of governance and that ruling MDP did not accept the result of the referendum held to decide the country’s governance system back when the constitution was first implemented.

He noted that all the hurdles of governance was partially due to the fact that the constitution was not designed to be implemented under a presidential system of governance.
