Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that currently 12 islands and 7 resorts have active cases of COVID-19 as authorities strengthen the measures taken against the pandemic here in the Maldives.
In a tweet, HPA listed 12 islands from across the country that are currently hosting active cases of COVID-19. These include Haa Alifu Kela, Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Filladhoo, Haa Dhaalu Navaidhoo, Baa Kudarikilu, Baa Kamadhoo, Raa Inguraidhoo, Raa Hulhudhufaaru, Lhaviyani Hinnavaru, Kaa Maafushi, Vaavu Fulidhoo and Fuvamulah City.
HPA also confirmed that 7 resorts currently have active cases of COVID-19.
The agency said that this includes 6 tourists and 9 resort staff.
HPA did not reveal the names of the resorts that had reported COVID-19 cases.
The Maldives reopened its borders mid-July after closing it back in March to deter the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and have welcomed over 1000 tourists by the end of July.
But recently, the country is experiencing a sudden surge in new cases of COVID-19 with HPA confirming over 600 new cases in the space of 5 days.
Yesterday HPA reported that the number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country has now reached 1996 and that 129 individuals remained hospitalized due to the illness.
The Maldives has recorded 19 COVID-19 related deaths in the country since April of this year with 14 locals and 5 foreigners passing away with the illness.
