Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed says a total of 93 police officers and staff had tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic reached Maldivian shores last march.
In a tweet, CP Hameed said that out of the 93 cases of COVID-19 from the police force, 56 were active cases.
He also said that the police force is taking stricter internal measures to mitigate the spread, the force continues to deliver leadership, resources, and support for the national effort.
With the number of COVID-19 cases increasing alarmingly in the country, the number of frontline workers infected with the illness have also risen.
Earlier this month, Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said a total of 64 healthcare professionals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives.
She said that last month alone 37 healthcare professionals tested positive for COVID-19.
Health Protection Agency HPA reported 148 new cases of COVID-19 in the country yesterday taking the total number of positive cases to a staggering 4594.
It also said that while 13 patients recovered from the illness, the country currently has 1869 active cases of COVID-19 with 110 admitted at hospitals for further treatment.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 19 lives in the Maldives including 14 locals and 5 foreigners.
