Health Protection Agency HPA confirms that a 80-year-old local woman with COVID-19 has passed away earlier today.
In a tweet, HPA said the woman died while under treatment at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility HMF ICU around 09:30 am.
HPA added that this is the 19th person to die of COVID-19 in the Maldives and the third person to die of the illness this week.
The 19 people who have died of the pandemic in the country include 14 locals and 5 foreigners.
Most of the locals who have passed away because of the pandemic are elderly and have underlying health issues. The locals who have died of COVID-19 include 6 men and 7 women.
The foreigners who have died of COVID-19 in the Maldives include 4 Bangladeshis and 1 Filipino.
The country has witnessed a rise in COVID-19 cases in the last couple of days with 344 individuals tested positive for the pandemic in the last 48 hours.
A total of 4293 have tested positive for the virus in the Maldives and the country is currently managing 1490 active cases of the illness. Authorities have reported that over 92 has been admitted to the hospital for further treatment and that several were in critical condition.
