Health Protection Agency HPA reports 129 new cases of COVID-19 as the country faces the second wave of the global pandemic.
In a tweet, HPA confirmed that 93 Maldivians, 23 Bangladeshis, 8 Indians, 4 Sri Lankans, and an Indonesian tested positive for COVID-19 in the country today.
Out of the 129 cases reported today 2 cases were confirmed from the islands.
This takes the total number of positive individuals to a staggering 4293 since the country’s first case back in March.
HPA also indicated that 27 individuals recovered from the illness today, taking the total number of recovered to a promising 2670.
But HPA indicated that there are 1490 active cases of COVID-19 in the country with 92 hospitalized for further treatment.
The pandemic has claimed 18 lives in the Maldives including 13 Maldivians and 5 foreigners. The locals who died of COVID-19 include 6 men and 7 women with most of them elderly patients with underlying health conditions.
The foreigners who have died of COVID-19 in the Maldives include 4 Bangladeshis and 1 Filipino.
With more and more cases reported each day, Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq indicated tonight that authorities were having a discussion on revamping the current restrictive measures to further control the pandemic and that they would announce these measures as soon as they can.
