The government says wearing masks in the public is now mandatory as the country experiences a surge of new cases of COVID-19 global pandemic.

The government took the decision at the latest meeting of the National Taskforce on COVID-19.

Announcing this decision, the President’s Office tweeted that in order to help yourselves and others, each individual should wear a mask in public and that it is now mandatory to wear one. It also urged the public to limit movements and contacts while maintaining self-hygiene and practicing social distancing.

The President’s Office noted that although the case numbers have risen in the last two weeks, avoiding another full lockdown is in everyone’s interest.

This comes after a drastic rise in positive cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Health Protection Agency HPA has reported almost 200 cases of the illness in the past 48 hours with most of those locals.

The latest update from HPA shows that 3567 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 with a surge of new cases reported in the last couple of days.

HPA has said that 2554 individuals have recovered from the illness but there are currently 983 active cases of COVID-19 in the country.
