Health Protection Agency HPA confirms that a total of 92 Maldivians tested positive for COVID-19 today as the country records its highest number of cases since the lockdown was eased earlier this month.

In its latest tweet, HPA said a total of 137 people tested positive for COVID-19 today including 92 locals, 31 Bangladeshis, 9 Indians, 4 Sri Lankans, and 1 Filipino national.

The total number of positive cases has now skyrocketed to 3506 in the Maldives.

HPA also confirmed that 2547 individuals have recovered from the illness in the country. It said currently there are 929 active cases of COVID-19 in the country and that the state is hosting 580 individuals at various isolation facilities in the country.

The Maldives has recorded 15 COVID-19 deaths since the outbreak was first reported back in April of this year. This includes 10 locals and 5 foreigners. The locals who died of COVID-19 include 5 men and 5 women.

All but two of the deceased were above 80 years of age.

The foreigners who had passed away of COVID-19 include four Bangladeshi nationals and 1 Filipino national.

The country has been experiencing a new surge of COVID-19 cases in recent days with alarming numbers reported daily.

But the government is yet to restore the strict lockdown measures it had implemented before which proved effective enough to deter the global pandemic in the island nation.
