Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 33 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives nearly a week after authorities initiated Phase III of the lockdown ease.

In a tweet, HPA said the 33 cases include 12 Maldivians, 18 Bangladeshis, and 3 Indians.

This is the highest number of new cases in one day since the lockdown was eased.

With new additions, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives now standards at 2468.

HPA had said that this includes more than 1200 Bangladeshi nationals and more than 860 locals.

Meanwhile, HPA also said that a total of 2049 individuals have recovered from the illness and there are currently 403 active cases of COVID-19 in the country.

HPA confirmed that 281 people remained under isolation while 108 are currently in quarantine at various locations.

Authorities have said that 12 people have died of COVID-19 in the Maldives up until now including seven locals and five foreigners. The locals who died of COVID-19 include 3 women and 4 men. All except for one were above 80 years when they died of the highly contagious illness.

Four Bangladeshis and one Filipino national have also died of COVID-19 in the Maldives.
