Health Protection Agency HPA said a 77-year-old local woman has died of COVID-19 in the Maldives.

In tweet, HPA confirmed that the patient had been under treatment at Dharumavantha Hospital 11th floor, DH11, and had passed away in the early hours of this morning.

HPA added that she is the 11th person to die of COVID-19 in the country with five other locals and five foreigners also dying of the illness in the country.

Media reports say the patient was the wife of the last Maldivian to die of COVID-19, a 92-year-old man.

This is the second time an elderly married couple had died of the global pandemic in the Maldives.

Since March this year, HPA had reported 2345 positive cases of COVID-19 in the country with mostly Bangladeshis tested positive for the virus in the Maldives.

HPA had confirmed yesterday that 2030 people have recovered from the illness and that only 390 active cases remained.
