Maldives Police Service have confiscated narcotics substances worth MVR5.6 million, and made three arrests.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed confirmed the items were nabbed during a special operation led by the Drug Enforcement Department since Sunday evening.
The Police Commissioner further commented the narcotic substances were confiscated from the satellite town of Hulhumale'.
According to Hameed, the substances weigh 6.8 kilograms, and have been identified as cannabis.
Maldives is a geographically unique country, which limits entry of contraband into the country while several watchdog authorities are constantly surveilling all cargo entry routes.
However, contraband entry have not been fully controlled; and narcotic substances are listed among the most smuggled items into the country.
Earlier, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih claimed the primary step in quashing entry of narcotic substances will be to barricade its entry routes.
