Bank of Maldives BML says that there has been no breach of card details at the bank
This comes after a list of BML issued cards made rounds on social media with reports of a major data breach of card information. The list contained the customer’s name, type of card held, and the balance on the card.
In a statement, the bank reaffirmed that there was no breach of data from the bank but merchants and e-commerce merchants around the world are often compromised and card details can as a result appear on the dark web.
BML said that together with its card associations, the bank continues to be vigilant and always investigate concerns of any data compromise.
It said that to this effect, last Thursday, it was notified of a potential breach of data from a large merchant by one of its card partners which may have affected 350 BML issued cards.
BML said that such breaches can typically impact many millions of customers around the world.
BML said that it has deactivated these cards and are in the process of issuing replacements for customers.
The Bank confirmed that in cases where a merchant is compromised, BML customers are fully protected and will not face any financial loss.
