Health Minister Abdullah Ameen says the government would extend the lockdown measures currently implemented in the Male’ Area but would also ease some of the restrictive measures taken to deter the spread of Covid-19.
Speaking to the press earlier this evening, the Minister said the government would extend the lockdown for a further two weeks ending on the 14th of next month.
He also said that authorities would ease some of the restrictive measures in phases and the first phase would be active starting tomorrow. He added that the first phase would last for two weeks.
The Minister highlighted that this would afford more individuals from each household to go out more frequently with each person allowed to remain outside for 2 hours.
Ameen also said that more retail shops would be allowed to resume business during this first phase.
But public parks, schools, government offices and mosques would remain closed for the next two weeks with non-essential travel between two islands still banned for the next 14 days.
The Greater Male’ Area have been under lockdown since 15th of April after the discovery of its first Covid-19 case. Since then a total of 1457 have now tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives with 5 deaths recorded in the country.
