Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir says communal prayers would begin in islands not under monitoring for Covid-19 starting with today’s Friday prayers.
Speaking to the media on the latest press briefing organized by the NEOC, Islamic Minister said congregational prayers were banned across the country as a precautionary measure against Covid-19 as advised by the health experts. He said the government had conferred with the country’s religious scholars before implementing these measures recommended by the health experts.
The Minister said although mosques would be open for congregational prayers, certain measures would be taken to ensure precaution against the highly contagious virus.
He highlighted that;
- Individuals should perform Wudu (ablutions before prayers) before entering mosques
- Elderly persons should perform prayers at home
- Individuals should not spend more time in the mosques
- Individuals should take prayer mats to the mosques
- Carpets should be removed from mosques
- Individuals who have cold-like symptoms should not attend congregational prayers
- Individuals should wear masks even when going to mosques
Health Protection Agency HPA has placed 6 islands under monitoring because of the Covid-19 crisis. This includes Haa Alif Uligan and Thakandhoo from that atoll as well as Shaviyani Narudhoo and Milandhoo. HPA has also placed Noonu Manadhoo and Kaafu Atoll Thulushdhoo under monitoring.
Communal prayers remain banned in the Male’ Area with Islamic Ministry urging citizens to perform Fitr Eid prayers at home this year.
