President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says his government remains committed to upholding media freedom.

In a tweet to commemorate world Press Freedom Day, President Solih offered salutations of the day to country’s journalists.

He said in crises such as Covid-19 when misinformation could negatively affect public wellbeing, a free media that functions without fear or favour is crucial. He said this is why the current government remains committed to upholding media freedom.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Abdullah Imran said the government aims to cultivate and motivate the country’s journalists.

Speaking on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Journalists play a key role in upholding the Maldivian democracy and the government is working to further cultivate these reporters.

He said this work would be carried out hand in hand with the reporters in a way that highlights their concerns.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed thanked the media for its diligence in providing verified, scientific, and authentic news to keep the community well informed.

In a tweet, He said that Press Freedom is essential for the future peace, justice and human rights for all.

He said that on this day, the Maldives Police Service pledge to stand together and reaffirm the commitment to promote fundamentals of free press and improve police-media relations.
