71 Maldivians stranded in Bangladesh and Nepal has arrived home on a special flight of Bangladeshi Armed Forces.

Foreign Ministry said most of these Maldivians are medical students or doctors in training, who were stranded due to the lockdowns and travel restrictions imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Bangladesh and Nepal.

18 Maldivians from Nepal and 53 Maldivians from Bangladesh flied home aboard the military aircraft today.

Foreign Ministry said in response to a request by Maldives, Bangladesh Armed forces has also sent a medical team consisting of doctors and medical officers aboard the flight.

The ministry added that with the recent escalation of the Covid-19 situation in Maldives, the gesture by the Bangladeshi Government is well timed and much appreciated.

The Ministry also acknowledged the government of Nepal for facilitating the operation of a special flight to evacuate the Maldivians in Nepal to join the flight in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Foreign Ministry also extended deep appreciation to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff, General Aziz Ahmed, Foreign Minister Dr. A.K Momen, the Bangladeshi government and people for their timely assistance in repatriating the Maldivians and sending the medical team.
