Government spokesperson on Covid-19 Mr. Mabrouk Azeez says Maldives Police Services issued verbal warnings to 379 individuals these past two days for violating the curfew order imposed in the greater Male’ Region.
Addressing the media, Mr. Mabrouk said more people were warned on Friday compared to Thursday on which the curfew was first imposed.
Mr. Mabrouk said the reports from the traffic police painted a grim picture. He explained that yesterday only 95 people violated the curfew order in Male’ while 284 people broke the curfew today.
He said while in hulhumale 11 people were warned by the police for breaking the curfew yesterday, the number spiked to 67. He added that police in Villimale warned 25 people for breaking the curfew.
Mr. Mabrouk highlighted out of the 379 people issued warnings today, 333 were Maldivians and the remaining were foreign nationals.
He added that although police issued warning on the first two days of the curfew, police would start fining repeat offenders tomorrow.
HPA issued a curfew order earlier this week saying that a curfew would be imposed in the Greater Male’ Area, including Male’, Villimale and Hulhumale’, from 5pm to 8pm everyday. HPA said public transports; including bus and ferry services would also be suspended during the curfew.
Maldives police had said that they implement the curfew diligently and that violators would be first warned and then fined by an amount of 1000 rufiyaa for repeated offenses.
The measure was taken as part of the government’s fight against global pandemic Covid-19.
