Government says Maldivians can now send care packages to their families in Sri Lanka via cargo flights to the country.

Speaking to the press at Dharubaaruge, official government Spokesperson on Covid-19 updates Mr. Mabrouk Azeez said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sanctioned the initiative and that Foreign Ministry will spearhead the efforts with the help of Maldives Police Services, Maldives Customs Service and National carrier Maldivian. He said authorities were working to collect and send care packages from families to the Maldivians in Lanka on the cargo flight scheduled fly to the country next Sunday.

He added that Foreign Ministry would clarify the process of collection of care packages in the coming days.

Mr. Mabrouk highlighted that same-day delivery is near impossible with the current situations abroad and that officials were working on how to deliver the parcels to its recipients in a timely manner.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid had previously said that the Ministry was working to identify ways to send care packages to Maldivians stranded in the Island Nation and that these packages maybe send abroad the cargo flights.

National Carrier Maldivian has been chartering its cargo flight to Lanka to transport goods to Maldives. Yesterday alone the flight carried 10 tons of goods from Lanka to Maldives.

Sri Lankan authorities have imposed a curfew in the country to deter global pandemic Covid-19. Sri Lankan authorities are implementing strict rules to prevent further spread of the deadly virus including closing down businesses and also allowing only one person from each household to do grocery shopping when the curfew is lifted temporarily
