The President's Office Under Secretary and official spokesperson on COVID-19 developments, Mr. Mabrouk Abdul Azeez confirms two residences in Male' City have been brought under complete lockdown to test for presence of the virus.
Mr. Azeez confirmed on the development during the latest press conference held on Monday afternoon.
Reports confirm individuals who came into close contact with famous footballer Marouane Fellaini, during his stay in Maldives, resided in the buildings in question.
The former Manchester United player was tested positive for COVID-19 and confirmed by Fellaini himself on his official Twitter handle.
Health authorities have locked down both residences barring anyone from entering or exiting the premises until test results of building residents can be conducted.
Meanwhile two other local individuals who came in contact with Fellaini have been transferred to Velidhoo Isolation Facility for screening.
The official spokesperson on the COVID-19 issue, had requested any individual who may have come in contact with the footballer to come forward and report to health officials.
The Belgian footballer vacationed at One & Only Reethi Rah, while Health Protection Agency (HPA) was contact tracing to assess and contain the possible spread of the virus.
Fellaini who currently appears in the Chinese Super League, received confirmation of him testing positive for the virus when he reached his current country of stay; China.
Although Mr. Azeez notes Fellaini may have contracted the disease after he departed from Maldives, authorities were currently assessing the entire event to check for possible scenarios.
The Maldives had reported 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19 out of which 5 recoveries have been confirmed on Monday afternoon.
