Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has confirmed a total of 7,000 housing units will be developed at the Greater Male' region.

The housing project comes as a pledge of current government, to provide affordable housing for the residents of Male' City and Greater Male' region.

Initially the housing project was planned with development of 4,000 units which was increased to 7,000.

Under the project, the first batch involving 3,000 units will commence work in the coming month of March according to President Solih.

Earlier, during the presidential address, President Solih had assured the housing project will commence in 2020.

Speaking at the launch of 'Male' City Streetscaping Project', President Solih had stressed the initial 4,000 units were targeted at locals of Male' City.

However, following a survey the Maldives government discovered several families residing in the Greater Male' region required immediate housing solutions.

While the first batch of units will have work commencing in the coming month, the second batch of remaining 4,000 units will be initiated sometime in 2020.

Meanwhile the 7,000 housing units under "Hiyaa Project" have drawn closer to completion.

Hiyaa Project was initiated and inaugurated by the previous Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his administration.

According to the incumbent government's five-year action plan, state aims to provide affordable housing for over 20,000 families residing in the Greater Male' region.

The state has targeted to achieve their pledge before the end of 2023 - which also marks the end of President Solih's five year presidential term.
