Businessman Ahmed Saleem, who represents Eydhafushi constituency at Maldives parliament has been appointed as the minority leader.
Parliament regulations cite the minority leader is appointed from the political party that has the lawmaker minority at the chambers - or in laymen's terms the second most seats controlled at the parliament.
The parliament Speaker confirmed Ahmed Saleem, or commonly known as 'RedWave' Saleem, as the new minority and opposition leader.
Following the appointment as the parliament's minority and opposition leader, a joyous Saleem claimed the day was prudent for PPM since it has received an opposition leader to represent at the parliament.
The lawmaker had further noted minorities deserve the political acknowledgement and recogition much like the majority holders in a multi-party democracy.
However, he bemoaned on majority's discriminatory conduct towards the parliament minority in general circumstances.
Previously the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had only five lawmakers representing constituencies at the parliament. However, following the transition of Fares-Maathoda MP into the party, the count at parliament increased to six.
