The Maldives political opposition has shared concerns to European Union regarding the five year imprisonment on former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The former Maldives head of state was found guilty of money laundering by the country's Criminal Court, and was sentenced to five years in jail with a fine of USD5 million.
The opposition coalition allied PNC's deputy leader and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef met with deputy managing director of External Action Service for Asia and Pacific, EU, Ms Paula Panpaloni.
At the meeting the opposition addressed on the jailing of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, claiming the trial proceeded outside the parameters of law.
Moreover, Shareef had shared the political challenges and oppression faced by the opposition during his meeting with the EU dignitary.
Speaking about the discussion, Shareef noted all matters associated with the unlawful imprisonment of PPM leader Yameen Abdul Gayoom was disclosed, adding EU's representative; Ms Panpaloni ensured the concerns will be brought to immediate attention of the organization's head office.
Meanwhile, the former President has appealed his sentencing at the Maldives High Court.
The Criminal Court's verdict is unanimously denied by the members of the opposition coalition which includes PPM and its ally PNC.
