The Maldives government has assured the safety and well-being of tourists will be paramount.

The Minister of Tourism in a press statement had acknowledged the Thursday's unpleasant incident at the island of Maafushi, Kaafu atoll.

In the statement the Ministry noted, regretting the "unprofessional conduct by the local police" while restraining a female tourist.

It was reported by the local law enforcement, the tourist who on repeated requests had refused to respect the dresscode regulations while it was highlighted on the ministry's statement, her attire had been against the "cultural sensitivities" as well.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Tourism confirms the Maldives Commissioner of Police has apologized from the general public and the tourist "concerned for the unseemly manner in which police officers conducted themselves during the incident."

Furthermore, the local law enforcement's Commissioner assured a full and comprehensive investigation on the incident has already commenced.

In addition to this, the Minister had also condemned the attack on three foreign nationals in Hulhumale' on 04 February 2020, Tuesday.

The Ministry of Tourism had stated Minister Ali Waheed personally met with the victims of the attack, who were now reportedly in stable condition.

Maldives Police Service has arrested a total of six individuals in relation to the attack.

In their closing statement the Ministry said the "safety and security of tourists" were the highest priority considered by the Ministry, adding the institution will take "all steps necessary to combat any acts that threaten the security and welfare of tourists and members of the public."
