The Maldives Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services has come under scrutiny following ruling party's parliamentary group pushing for a no confidence motion.
The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a super majority at the island nation's parliament, had its parliamentary group continuing ahead to file the motion of no confidence against the minister on gross negligence and general incompetency.
The parliamentary group on Wednesday, 05 January 2020, arrived to an unanimous decision to remove Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef from her cabinet designation.
The meeting was attended by 45 of the ruling party's lawmakers, all of whom coincided with the decision.
Gender Minister has come under fire following several cases of child rape and sexual abuse against minors surfacing, much to the chagrin of the Maldives public.
The alarming rate of surfacing cases, most involving underage children and minors had the public lambasting the ministry for negligence and incompetency.
The public outrage sparked abruptly following one particular case which involved a two year old infant getting sexually abused by her father, grandfather and great grandfather.
The case has also acted as a catalyst for the Maldives public to hold several protests and rallies against sexual abusers, many calling for rigorous punishment on perpetrators.
Many protestants had voiced their anger against the local authorities, especially Ministry of Gender for the apparent inaction on their part in ensuring safety of children.
