A man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after he was convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl.

The defendant has been identified as 47-year-old Mohamed Anil from M. Muniaage, Male'.

He was charged under the Special Procedures Against Child Sexual Offenders Act (Act No. 12/2009).

Police stated that they launched the investigation into the case immediately when it was filed and that they forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office once the investigation was concluded.

Police further said that the defendant was sentenced at the hearing held on the 15th of this month. They said that the defendant was initially given a sentence of 16 years in jail.

However, under Section 186 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, after deducting from the period of sentence the 4 months and 19 days he spent in custody in connection with this charge, the court gave him a punishment of 15 years, 7 months, and 11 days.

Police said that this case is a huge achievement in their work to prevent child sexual abuse cases and bring the perpetrators to justice. Police have assured that they will work without hesitation to create a safe environment for children and take action against those who sexually abuse and neglect children.
