President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Hassan Rasheed as Minister of Defence and National Service.

The letter of appointment was presented to the Minister at an official ceremony held at the President’s Office this evening.

The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Honourable Dr Mohamed Ibrahim, after which the Minister signed the declaration of oath.

This comes amid a major shakeup in the government as the President dissolved his previous cabinet and formed a new cabinet with several new ministries and Ministers.

Yesterday, 9 Ministers from the previous cabinet resigned suddenly, and the Government said that this was part of positive govermental reform.

Before the end of the day, 12 new Ministers took their oaths of Office, with 8 Ministers from the previous cabinet retaining their place on the cabinet.

The President appointed his Spokesperson, Heena Waleed, as the Minister of Art, Culture, and Heritage, while former Maldivian Ambassador to Belgium Geela Ali was named as the Minister of Health, Family, and Welfare. Career Diplomat Iruthisham Adam has been named as the Foreign Minister, while Ali Shareef was appointed as the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy
