A fire on an oil carrier vessel docked at the Oil Port of Faafu Atoll, Feeali, has left devastating damage in its wake.
The Maldives National Defence Force, MNDF, said today that the fire was reported at around 09:30 in the morning. MNDF said that firefighters from the Nilandhoo Fire Station were dispatched to the scene immediately, and that additional firefighters from the Kuda Huvadhoo Fire Station were also dispatched.
MNDF noted that it took them hours to control and fully extinguish the fire as the oil fed the blaze on the carrier.
They said that they extinguished the fire around 1:50 in the afternoon.
MNDF reported that a Bangladeshi man working on the oil carrier suffered serious burns on his body and was rushed to the island's health center.
The fire also damaged three vessels docked at the port and the nearby ice plant.
