Police have arrested two indian women at Velaana International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle a large amount of narcotics into the country.
Police identified the suspects as 23-year-old Ulfath Rasool and 34-year-old Jennifer Paul.
The duo arrived in the Maldives on the 1st of this month, and customs Officers questioned them upon arrival, citing suspicious behavior. Police said Customs Officers found 2kg of suspected drugs in their luggage after they were searched.
The suspects were then handed over to the Police who took them to a Criminal Court Judge for their remand hearing and were given 15 days of remand custody.
Police are further investigating the case.
Police, customs, and other relevant agencies are working together to close the doors of drug smuggling into the Maldives and prevent such dangerous acts. Security at the airport and ports has been tightened.
