The Criminal Court has sentenced a local man to 12 years and 6 months in jail after he was convicted of cannabis trafficking.

Police said that the defendant was also fined for MVR 100,000 in his sentence, which was given on the 25th of this month.

Police identified the defendant as 31-year-old Hamdoon Ahmed, who was arrested back in February 2024.

Police said that they had completed their investigation of the case and forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General for charging in April, later that year.

The police hailed this conviction as a result of their efforts against drug traffickers and drug networks.

They further assured that the Maldives Police Service was making special efforts to take the strictest legal action against drug dealers.
