Faavaz, along with two others, was arrested and charged with intentional homicide with a sharp object, obstruction of justice, and misuse of corpse in November of 2023.

It said that on 9 March 2026, the Maldives Correctional Service brought to this office's attention that Hassan Fawaz's lockup is preventing him from receiving adequate treatment in prison.
It said that it requested the Criminal Court to relieve Hassan Fawaz of his custody with the following conditions as a special measure to protect his right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The Prosecutor General's Office said that the suspect's release was subject to several conditions, including;

- In all cases, except where he has to appear elsewhere for medical treatment, appear and sign at the nearest police station between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm every day.
- Not leave Male'
- Not to interact with, meet, or influence witnesses with anyone who is believed to testify in the case.

The Prosecutor General said that as the suspect has agreed to the condition, the Criminal Court granted his conditional release today.
It also said that the Police and Correctional Services will continue to monitor him to ensure that he follows the conditions of his release and that he would be jailed if he fails to comply with the agreed conditions.
