Maldives Zakat House has begun collecting Zakat al-Fitr via cash and card, specifically targeting individuals who are not familiar with making Zakat payments online.

It said in Malé, the collection began today at counters established in the Islamic Center Conference Hall.

The scheduled times for Zakat collection at these counters are:

  • 22 February to 9 March: 10:00 to 13:00 Every working day.
  • 10 March to 19 March: 11:00 to 14:00 Every day except Fridays and Saturdays.

The Zakat House said that in the atolls, individuals unfamiliar with online payments can pay Fitr Zakat by visiting their respective local council offices. It explained that councils will utilize a specially developed "Fitr Portal" to accept Zakat in the form of cash or grain.

When members of the public visit council offices or the Islamic Centre to pay Zakat in cash, authorized staff will immediately record the transaction in the portal. Upon completion of the payment, the individual will receive an instant SMS confirming the amount paid as Fitr Zakat. Additionally, if any extra amount was paid as Sadaqah (charity), that figure will also be included in the message.
