Police have arrested a major player in a large-scale scam network that had been operating primarily through Facebook's Marketplace platform.
They identified the suspect as 36-year-old Nadheef Mohamed from Gaafu Alifu Gemanafushi. Police said that Nadheef was arrested on the 11th of this month under a court order.
Police also stated that after he was arrested, the suspect was searched and that cash cards, SIM cards, mobile phones, cash in local currency, and dollars were recovered from him.
Police said that he was arrested for allegedly extorting money from a person by fraudulently claiming to sell goods through Facebook and then depositing the money into another person’s account.
Nadheef is also accused of repeatedly participating in planning and conducting such scams and collecting money from scam networks.
He had been remanded in custody for 5 days.
