Police have confirmed that the bodies of two inmates who died in prison on the same day have been sent abroad for autopsies as the investigation into their deaths continues.

Police had said that they had launched an investigation into the deaths of 53-year-old inmate Ibrahim Suhail and 45-year-old inmate Hassan Niyaz, who died on the 2nd of this month.

Police said their bodies have now been sent to India for autopsies to rule out any foul play in their deaths.

The Maldives Correctional Service said that Suhail had died while under treatment for Pneumonia at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Correctional Services confirmed that Niyaz passed away after he collapsed and was rushed to Hulhumale' Hospital for treatment.

Both inmates were serving their sentences in Hulhumale' jail.
