Transparency International has awarded the Maldives a score of 39 in its 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).

The CPI 2025 scored and ranked 182 countries and territories by their perceived level of publicsector corruption, drawing on surveys and expert assessments. The index uses a scale of zero to100, where zero is highly corrupt, and 100 is very clean.

The Maldives, with a score of 39, isranked 91 out of 182 countries in the CPI 2025. In CPI 2024, the Maldives scored 38 and was ranked at 96 out of 182 in the index.

Transparency Maldives said Maldives’ CPI score remains concerning, reflecting systemic vulnerabilities to corruption thatundermine public trust, weaken institutions, and limit citizens’ access to justice and essentialservices.

With the release of the score, it is important to reflect on recent developments in thearea of governance, legislative changes, and institutional practices that creates systemicvulnerabilities to corruption.

It said that from politicized appointments to opaque decision-making in state-owned enterprises, systemic vulnerabilities continue to undermine public trust and accountability.

Transparency Maldives called for urgent reforms to restore institutional integrity and protect the fundamental freedoms necessary to tackle corruption effectively.
