Maldives Correctional Services says a prisoner who was serving his sentence at Hulhumale' Jail has died while he was being treated at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, IGMH.
Correctional Services said that 53-year-old Ibrahim Suhail passed away earlier this morning. It said that the prisoner had been admitted to the hospital for a week before his demise.
It said that the prisoner passed away while being treated for Pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs (alveoli) in one or both lungs, causing them to fill with fluid or pus, which leads to coughing, fever, chills, and breathing difficulties.
The Correctional Services said that the prisoner had suffered a stroke in 2025 and was seeking treatment for it.
It also stated that the Service immediately informed the Maldives Police Service, his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and the National Integrity Commission of the death.
