Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla met with Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, during his official visit to India.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), held in New Delhi, where Speaker Abdul Raheem is participating as part of the Maldivian parliamentary delegation. During the meeting, he commended the arrangements and organisation of the conference, noting that it reflected the Lok Sabha’s continued commitment to strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation among Commonwealth countries.
Discussions also focused on the long-standing friendship between the Maldives and India, with Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighting opportunities to further enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between the two parliaments.
The Majlis Speaker expressed appreciation for the training and capacity-building programmes provided to People’s Majlis Secretariat staff under the memorandum of understanding between the two parliaments, and discussed ways to further institutionalise parliamentary cooperation to strengthen the existing framework of collaboration.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reaffirmed India’s readiness to share its expertise in parliamentary operations, including digital innovations and training through the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), and underscored parliamentary cooperation as an important pillar of Maldives–India relations.
