The Parliament has backed the appointment of former Minister Dr. Aishath Rameela as the President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, HRCM.

The post of the President of HRCM became vacant when the previous president completed her term back in November. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed the former Animal Welfare Minister to the HRCM on the 3rd of December last year.

He then requested the Parliament to greenlight her appointment as the President of the HRCM. The Parliament forwarded the President's request to the Human Rights Committee of the legislative house at the extraordinary session held yesterday.

The approval process moved forward quickly as the attendees of the Committee meeting unanimously agreed to appoint Rameela as the new President of the Commission.

While the Parliament held another extraordinary session today, the whole-house vote for Rameel's appointment was taken today, with 38 MPs taking part in the vote.

She was backed for the post with the vote from all 38 MPs at today's session.
