President of Hoarafushi Council, Mohamed Waheed, has been suspended for three months after the Local Government Authority LGA investigated several complaints against him.
The LGA said that he would be suspended without pay and that other Councillors would be advised about their conduct.
The LGA stated that it decided to suspend Waheed following an inquiry into eight cases, including complaints submitted to the LGA.
The cases against the Council President include instances where the Council had given pieces of land to residents against the island's Land Use Plan.
There is also a complaint to the LGA that the council's procurement employees are on the bid committee, and the Hoarafushi council does not provide the information requested under the Right to Information Act.
The Authority had also looked into cases where the Hoarafushi Council spent its funds illegally, against the Public Finance Act.
The LGA said Waheed was suspended after the inquiry because he was given the primary responsibility of ensuring that the council runs in accordance with the law and regulations.
