The Chairperson of the Maldives Democratic Party, MDP, Fayyaz Ismail, has resigned from his post.
He announced his decision at the end of the party National Council meeting held last night. Fayyaz spoke at length about his decision to resign from his post.
Fayyaz stated that he is the only one who has officially expressed interest in competing in the 2028 Presidential Election Party Primary, and that his announcement is affecting his ability to perform his duties as chairperson of MDP.
Fayyaz said that he did not want to give the perception to other potential primary candidates that everything he does as the Chairperson is to his own benefit as a primary candidate.
The former Economic Minister said that during his tenure as the Chairperson of MDP, he had worked to repair the rift caused in the party when two factions were formed following the Presidential Primary held for the 2023 Presidential Elections.
The rift between supporters of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed caused the latter to form his own party.
