Malé, November 11 — Bank of Maldives (BML) has received international recognition from Mastercard for its contribution to advancing the Maldives’ digital economy through the Digital Country Partnership initiative.
The award was presented to BML’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, by Sandun Hapugoda, Mastercard’s Country Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, during the Digital Finance Leadership event held in Singapore.
The Digital Country Partnership, signed in August 2025 between the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, Bank of Maldives, and Mastercard, aims to strengthen the Maldives’ digital infrastructure and promote secure, accessible financial services nationwide. The partnership focuses on creating new opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities to participate in the growing digital economy.
BML and Mastercard have maintained a longstanding collaboration since the Bank became a Principal Member of Mastercard in 2002. Over the years, the two institutions have introduced several initiatives that have reshaped the local financial landscape, including the rollout of digital payments for the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) — part of the country’s broader smart city drive.
The recognition highlights BML’s expanding role in the digital transformation of the Maldives’ financial sector and its efforts to integrate technology-driven solutions across its services.
In a statement, BML said the acknowledgment underscores the Bank’s “commitment to driving innovation and fostering collaboration” to support the nation’s economic and technological development. (Source: BML)
