Electoral Officials have reported a low turnout for early voting in the referendum being held today in Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo of Addu City regarding the formation of separate councils.
The purpose of the referendum is to seek public opinion on whether to restructure the Addu City Council, following repeated requests from residents of the three islands.
The Elections Commission said up until 12:00 pm today, only 17 percent of the voters have cast their votes in the referendum. It said that 1,661 voters have expressed their opinion via the vote, and that this includes 789 women and 872 men.
The Commission noted that 7,915 voters have yet to cast their votes, as 9,576 are eligible to vote in this historic public referendum.
While voting will continue till 4:00 pm, the Commission has placed 18 ballot boxes for the vote. This includes 5 boxes in Feydhoo, 3 boxes in Hulhudhoo, 3 boxes in Feydhoo, and 7 in Male', where many are originally from Addu City.
