Police have identified the 5th suspect arrested in the case of the stolen 2 cigarette containers, which were smuggled illegally into the country.
Police arrested the suspect last night and identified the suspect as 52-year-old Hassan Abdul Raheem from Kaafu Thulusdhoo.
They further said that the Criminal Court has remanded the suspect in custody till the end of his trial and that the Police are further investigating the case.
The incident happened last April when two containers of illegally imported cigarettes worth MVR 112 million in duty 'vanished while at the MPL Hulhumale' port after Maldives Customs had seized the shipment.
Police had reported that parts of the two containers were recovered during an operation conducted on October 19, 2025, to search various sites in Thilafushi.
They added that they have now brought the parts under their custody.
Four others have been arrested in the case including 2 prominent businessmen and a senior official from Maldives Customs Service.
