The President of the Elections Commission, Mohamed Zahir, says the Commission has scheduled the local council elections and the election to select the Women's Development Committee of the islands for March 28th, 2026.
Speaking on PSM's 'Raaje Miadhu' program, Zahir said these two elections are the most administratively difficult and require the most preparations.
He said early preparations for the elections have begun. He said that the commission has fixed March 28, 2026, as the date for the election, and the opening of nominations will be held in January.
Zahir said that candidates contesting the council elections will have to submit their candidacies online through the Election Commission's portal.
Zahid said this is an important step to simplify administrative arrangements and reduce costs.
In addition, Zahir said that about 270 employees are needed for the administrative affairs of this election. The recruitment process for the election task force is already underway, he said.
The President of the Electoral Watchdog said that the trainers are already being recruited from the focal points in each island and that these are taken to arrange administrative arrangements at the island level.
Zahir noted that a wide-scale awareness program must be held ahead of the local council elections and that Commission teams would be deployed to 36 islands from 12 atolls with large populations. He added that the awareness session would begin next month and that addidional awarness campaigns would be carried out with other media tools.
