Housing Development Corporation HDC says it would be checking whether the housing units leased under social housing program have been rented out by their owners.

This comes amid scrutiny from authorities following reports that housing unit owners are renting out their apartments at a much higher rent to make a huge profit from the units they received from social housing programs.

In a statement, HDC said that since the Social Housing Scheme is a government program to provide affordable housing to the homeless, the rental of these flats to another person is in violation of the agreement between HDC and the recipient of the social housing flat.

It said that the Corporation will continue to check whether the social housing units have been rented out.

HDC also said that if the flat has been rented to another person in violation of the agreement, the action stipulated in the agreement will be taken against them.

Fahi Dhiriulhunn Corporation FDC had also said that it would begin an inspection to see whether housing unit lessees have rented out their units to other parties.
