MP for Galolhu North Constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim, has proposed amending the Pensions Act to ensure that people with chronic illnesses receive their pension before age 65.

He said there is no system to get pensions based on medical prognosis. He said that the vacancy has placed undue financial and psychological burdens on the families of those affected.

The MP said that the amendment was proposed to ensure that a person suffering from "terminal illness" can get their pension benefits as soon as possible, irrespective of their age and years of work.

In addition, the amendment provides that the conditions of such patients will be assessed by a team of medical specialists constituted by the pension office as per the amendment, and to expedite the payment procedures, pension money must be disbursed within 30 days from the date of application.
