President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government has decided to stop the reclamation project in Baa Dhonfanu island as requested by the people amid concerns that the project would destroy the nearby Hanifaru Bay.

He made the statement on his official X account, addressing concerns regarding the planned land reclamation project in Dhonfanu.

The President reiterated his pledge to implement development projects across the islands in line with the wishes of local communities.

In this regard, President Dr Muizzu noted that although an agreement had already been signed for the Dhonfanu land reclamation project as per the citizens’ requests, the Government will no longer move forward with the project due to the change in public opinion.

He further confirmed that the relevant authorities would formally notify the Dhonfan Island Council of the decision today.

This comes after more than 4,000 people signed an online petition calling the government to stop the project.

The petition stated that Hanifaru Bay, designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, serves as a vibrant habitat for some of the world's most awe-inspiring marine life, including the endangered manta rays, majestic whale sharks, and a myriad of coral reefs.

It said that these ecosystems are intricately tied to the biodiversity of our planet and underpin the livelihoods of many local communities who rely on eco-tourism and fisheries.
