A man has been electrocuted in Addu City while trying to cut an electric cable.

Speaking about the incident, the Media Official at Addu Equatorial Hospital, Nishaza Abdullah, said that a 33-year-old was injured in the incident.

The man's life is not in danger, Nishaza said, adding that tests are being conducted on his right and left legs. She said that the decision to transfer the patient to Male' would be taken once the results of these tests come back.

It was reported that the incident happened in the early hours of today and that, because of the incident, parts of Addu City experienced a power shortage.

Cutting electric cables has become common in the Maldives as the wires sell for a lucrative price on the black market. However, cutting electric cables is very dangerous as offenders get electrocuted, which results in major burns and, in some tragic cases, death.
