Police are searching for the mother of a newborn who tested positive for traces of narcotics at birth.
They identified the mother as Aminath Shifza,40, from Seenu Atoll.
Police stated that the Crimes Against Children department is investigating the case. They have been unable to serve her the notice to appear for the investigation as they are unable to verify her whereabouts.
Police further added that, as per the criminal procedures in such cases, they have publicly requested the child's mother to appear for questioning on 27 July.
In the Maldives, there are rare cases of maternal drug exposure to the child, which can lead to many health problems.
In some such cases, if there is no one in the family to take responsibility for the child, the children are taken into the custody of the state.
