The Health Ministry has begun a probe into the death of an 8-month-old baby who passed away last night while under treatment at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital IGMH.
A top official from the Ministry confirmed that a probe is underway and that the Ministry cannot make a comment about the investigation at the moment.
The official added that the Ministry would state once they collect the required information.
A social media post about the incident has caught the attention of netizens as it aimed heavy criticism at the state-run IGMH.
The post said that the child was taken to the hospital because he had a cough and cold, but that he died because of liver failure five days later.
The post accused officials at the IGMH pediatric ward of being negligent in administering care for the child, as they refused to shift the child to the ICU as his condition continued to deteriorate.
It further detailed that the family of the child had to demand and shout at the hospital staff for them to arrange for a pediatric doctor to examine the child on the 4th day after being admitted, as the child was crying constantly in pain.
The post also mentioned that the National Social Protection Agency NSPA was unable to facilitate timely service and arrange for the child to be taken abroad for further treatment. It stated that tragically, the call from NSPA confirming the arrangements came 10 minutes after the child died.
